Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde has delivered one of the most memorable Champions League hat-tricks, but where does it stand compared to other legendary performances from Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, and Tottenham?
Nothing in club football matches the intensity of Champions League nights, and scoring three goals in the high-stakes knockout stages is the mark of true legends, achieved only by the elite.
Here, we rank the 10 greatest Champions League knockout stage hat-tricks.
10. Kylian Mbappe – Real Madrid vs Man City (2024-25)
Just edging out his hat-trick against Barcelona (which was behind closed doors, slightly diminishing its impact), Mbappe claims the No. 10 spot.
Man City arrived at the Bernabeu disorganized and were overwhelmed by an Mbappe-inspired Madrid.
He opened the scoring with a perfectly timed run and a brilliant looping first-time finish in the fourth minute, doubled the lead by outplaying Josko Gvardiol, and completed his hat-trick with a composed finish after cutting inside.
All in a night’s work.
9. Karim Benzema – Chelsea vs Real Madrid (2021-22)
This was King Karim’s second consecutive Champions League hat-trick.
While the first inspired a stunning comeback against PSG, this one arguably edges it.
Two brilliant headers put Madrid in control at Stamford Bridge. The third goal, less spectacular due to a defensive error by Benjamin Mendy, rewarded Benzema’s relentless pressing.
He was at the absolute peak of his powers. That year’s Ballon d’Or was lifted thanks to performances like this.
8. Adriano – Inter vs Porto (2004-05)
With countless hours spent on Pro Evo, our nostalgia-tinged minds expected more of the classic 'Shot Power 99' Adriano strikes.
Though the first goal was a bit of a fluke, his hat-trick — which knocked out the defending champions Porto — reminded everyone why he was once hailed as the heir to Ronaldo Nazário.
Unstoppable.
7. Federico Valverde – Real Madrid vs Man City (2025-26)
Like all truly great hat-tricks, Valverde saved his best goal for last.
To avoid accusations of recency bias, we’ve placed this one at No. 7, but watch all three goals and tell us you’ve seen many better.

6. Robert Lewandowski – Borussia Dortmund vs Real Madrid (2012-13)
Another four-goal masterclass.
While none of Lewandowski’s goals were breathtaking individually, his turn and close control for the third were exquisite. Overall, it was a clinic in exceptional centre-forward play, including a powerful penalty finish.
This performance came in a Champions League semi-final against Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid, featuring a formidable defense with Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane, and Pepe. Outrageous.
5. Cristiano Ronaldo – Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid (2016-17)
Ronaldo may have been more dynamic in his younger Manchester United days, but this performance exemplifies his evolution into an incredibly efficient goalscoring machine.
He scored three of the 12 goals he netted that season as Madrid became the first team in the modern Champions League era to retain the trophy.
4. Cristiano Ronaldo – Juventus vs Atletico Madrid (2018-19)
Ronaldo again. Diego Simeone must have been exhausted facing him.
This was exactly what Juventus hoped for when signing the five-time Ballon d’Or winner — the missing piece to finally win the Champions League after losing two finals.
Fresh from winning three consecutive titles with Real Madrid, Ronaldo stood tall on the biggest stage, scoring all three goals in a second-leg comeback from two goals down. Two unstoppable headers and a nerves-of-steel penalty sealed the hat-trick.
Though Juventus were later eliminated by Ajax, Lyon, and Porto in his three seasons, this was the only knockout tie Ronaldo won with the club — and on that night, they looked destined to conquer the world.
3. Lionel Messi – Barcelona vs Arsenal (2009-10)
Messi was the reigning Ballon d’Or holder and the standout player for Pep Guardiola’s treble-winning Barcelona the previous season.
On nights like this, he ascended to another level. Even in his early twenties, Messi outshone contemporaries like Kaka, Wayne Rooney, and Ashley Young, entering the conversation with all-time greats like Pele and Diego Maradona.
Don’t just take our word for it:
“We lost against a team better than us with the best player in the world,” admitted Arsene Wenger after the match.
“He made the impossible possible. He has something exceptional. He is unstoppable. He is the best player in the world by some distance. He’s like a PlayStation.”
Messi scored four goals that night, allowing fans to pick their favorite three for the hat-trick. Goalkeeper Manuel Almunia was made to look helpless, especially on the fourth.
2. Lucas Moura – Ajax vs Tottenham (2018-19)
In terms of pure goal quality, Moura’s hat-trick may not rank with the greatest.
However, all three goals showcased relentless determination to see Tottenham through, including capitalizing on a rare mistake from Andre Onana for the second.
Contextually, this is arguably the most dramatic and astonishing hat-trick ever — sending Spurs to their first Champions League final by completing a three-goal comeback in the sixth minute of injury time.
Moura’s winner perfectly exemplified the away goals rule at its finest, swinging the tie from heartbreak to pure elation instantly.
1. Ronaldo Nazario – Man Utd vs Real Madrid (2002-03)
Possibly the greatest hat-trick ever scored in a losing effort.
Real Madrid lost 4-3 at Old Trafford, but Ronaldo’s breathtaking hat-trick was crucial in them advancing in the tie.
Long since etched into football folklore, there’s little left to say about R9’s performance against Manchester United that hasn’t already been said.
Just bask in the glory of it.
