Lionel Messi made more MLS history Wednesday evening as Inter Miami defeated the New England Revolution 2-1 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. The Argentine scored both goals as the Herons claimed all three points on the road, securing their fourth straight regular-season win and extending their MLS unbeaten streak to five matches.
The match was record-setting for several reasons, including Messi becoming the first player in MLS history to score multiple goals in four consecutive games. For New England, the game marked their highest-attended home match of the season, drawing 43,293 fans. Last season, the Revolution hosted 65,612 spectators for their match against Messi and Miami—the largest turnout in franchise history.
Regarding the match, Messi opened the scoring in the 27th minute after Revolution defender Tanner Beason attempted to head the ball back to goalkeeper Aljaz Ivacic. Messi intercepted the pass and calmly finished to net his first goal of the evening. Eleven minutes later, he doubled Miami's lead by slotting home a precise through ball from Sergio Busquets into the bottom right corner beneath the diving Ivacic.
The Revolution created several chances to get back into the game but lacked clinical finishing until the final stages. With 10 minutes remaining, club stalwart Carles Gil unleashed a powerful long-range shot after dribbling past Tomas Aviles, cutting the deficit in half. However, it was too late for the Northeastern club, as their attacking momentum arrived only in the closing moments and they could not find an equalizer.
Since returning from the FIFA Club World Cup, Miami has won two straight matches while outscoring opponents 6-2. With Wednesday’s victory, the South Beach club moved up to 35 points through 18 matches, placing fifth in the Eastern Conference standings. They trail first-place FC Cincinnati by seven points but hold three games in hand.
