If the USMNT wins its group, they will play in Santa Clara.
What is the 2026 FIFA World Cup format?
The World Cup draw on Friday divided 48 teams (including placeholders) into 12 groups of four teams each. Each team will play three group stage matches, facing every other team in its group once.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage, as in previous tournaments. However, the expansion from 32 to 48 teams introduces an additional knockout round. Instead of 16 teams advancing to the first knockout round, 32 teams will advance from the group stage.
This means all 12 group winners and 12 runners-up will advance, along with the eight best third-place teams. The exact matchups for the Round of 32 will depend on which groups the eight third-place teams come from.
The knockout stage consists of single-elimination matches, culminating in the final. If a match is tied after regular time, 30 minutes of extra time (two 15-minute halves) will be played, followed by a penalty shootout if necessary.
